In the past, all headphones were basically the same and there was nothing that really separated them apart. Cheap headphones were designed with the same style and the same color. They were created for one thing, to listen to your music or your TV, without disturbing others around you. At this current time things have changed and
are completely different. They are manufactured in many different styles and also a variety of colors. Headphones can be used for different purposes and they can do a lot more than keep your noise from disturbing others.
When you're ready to buy a pair of stereo headphones, you need to first decide on why you need them. What audio source do you want to use with the headphones? Do you want to use them with one, specific type of audio source, such as your home stereo system? Or, do you want to use them on a variety of items such as iPod players, MP3 players, computers, televisions, etc.? The different kinds of audio equipment that you may want to use cheap stereo headphones with could be endless.
After you've decided on the most popular audio equipment you plan on using the stereo headphones with, you should decide why you need the headphones. Is the main priority to prevent others from being disturbed by your entertainment or do you want to smother the noise others are making? This is important and makes a big difference.
If you don't care about disturbing others, buy larger, full size stereo headphones and crank the volume. If you don't want others to disturb you, buy smaller, noise canceling headphones to deaden their sound.
Inner Headphone Designs
Besides the outer shell of the design (Earbuds, wireless, behind-the-neck, etc.), headphones are basically of two types: Dynamic and Electrostatic. Dynamic headphones use cones which are also called diaphragms, made from paper and other various materials. The cone is attached to a wire called a voice coil. This coil propels up and down in an extremely rapid movement, moving the cone with it. This movement produces air ripples which in turn produces sound.
The only difference between cheap electrostatic headphones and dynamic headphones is the use of cone. In electrostatic headphones, the cone is a very thin sheet of Mylar. In these headphones, the air is displaced by movement of Mylar. Electrostatic headphones give extremely detailed output with less distortion. Dynamic headphones are more common amongst the masses and still produce good sound quality.
The History Of Headphones
In the 1930s, Beyerdynamic (A German company) began marketing some of the world’s first headphones that were designed to be used by the public. This company claims that they invented the “first dynamic headphones” in 1937 and have continued to produce a modified version of that model today.
A man whose last name is very popular in headphone technology, John C. Koss, invented stereo headphones in 1958, providing a “full amplitude” of sound. Because of Beyerdynamic and John C. Koss, headphones have evolved into what we see and use today.
